22 April 2009 One Comment

Every Cooking Recipe starts with a set of simple basic ingredients. When you are trying to create an easy homemade meal for your family you need a simple recipe to begin with. Once you have that then you can let your imagination create endless possibilities.

Adding a bit of this and some of that will become easy, fun and most important inexpensive. You can use your starter recipe then add to it what you have on hand from the spice rank or the pantry and create new and exciting desserts or side dishes without the complicated ingredients listed in most recipes published this day in age.

If we recall 50 years back in time, our parents and grandparents created meals using the basic ingredients that were grown from the garden or on the farm. I cannot remember ever seeing a box of biscuit or cake mix in my mothers pantry. We had all the delicious desserts, biscuits and home-cooked meals but they were not prepared from a box or bag, they were prepared by using a cooking recipe to start with, then the additional ingredients of choice were added after to create those traditional family dishes we loved as a child and still prepare for our families today.

Most household pantries already have all the ingredients necessary for a basic recipe to start with. These are the ingredients we use every day for just about anything we are cooking in the kitchen. Here is simple list of what you need to start a simple recipe mix:

  • Flour
  • Baking Powder
  • Salt
  • Shortening

I bet those are sitting on your pantry shelf already. Here is the best part, the remaining ingredients are also on the pantry shelf probably right next to the 4 I just listed.

For biscuits you would need some dry milk, for cinnamon rolls some sugar and cinnamon or for griddle cakes (pancakes) a dash of sugar and water. And let’s no leave out my favorite a good homemade cake recipe would also include some eggs, vanilla, sugar and water.

Most people prefer to buy a cake mix and follow the directions or purchase a bag of biscuits from the bakery already prepared as we are busy and love the convenience of  already prepared items.

But if you really want to get back to the basics, save money and eat healthier by creating  a home cooked meal or dessert then having a simple cooking recipe to begin with will assist you as create endless possibilities from the kitchen.
