Recipe For Biscuits And Biscuit Swirls

Creating a Recipe for biscuits or biscuit swirls is a great way to compliment a family meal.

Use the recipe either as a side dish with dinner or a sweet tasty treat anytime of the day.

Use the Cooking Recipe for Multipurpose Baking Mix along with the fillings and variation ideas given below.

This can be quick and expensive and fun for both the beginning cook or

those with a bit more experience behind the apron.

Multipurpose Baking Mix

9 cups of flour1/3 cup baking powder
1 cup + 2 tbsp dry powdered milk
4 tsp salt
1 ¾ cups of shortening

Recipe for Biscuits: add 2 cups of baking mix (see above) and 1/2 cup of water and stir 20-25 times. Knead gently on floured surface about 14 times. Roll or pat to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut with floured biscuit cutter or in squares with floured knife. Place on un-greased baking sheet and bake at 425 degrees for 10-12 minutes. Makes 12-14 biscuits.

  • Bacon Biscuits: add 1/4 cup minced, crisp cooked bacon to dry baking mix
  • Cheesy Biscuits : add 1/3 cup of grated sharp cheese to dry baking mix
  • Orange Biscuits: add 1 tsp grated orange rind to dry baking mix, omit water, use instead 1 to 2 tsp of sugar and 1/2 cup of orange juice
  • Onion Biscuits: add 1 to 2 tsp grated onion to liquid  - these are great when served with meat stews or use as a topping for meat pies.
  • Raisin Biscuits: add 1/3 cup raisins, 1 tbsp sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon to dry baking mix

Recipe For Biscuit Swirls: stir 2 cups of baking mix (see above) and 2 tbsp of sugar together, add 1/2 cup water and stir 25 times. Turn onto lightly floured surface and knead 10-15 times. Roll to 1/3-inch thick and 6-8 inches wide. Spread evenly with filling (see ideas below) except last inch on far side. Roll up. Cut 3/4 to 1-inch thick. Placed in greased muffins tins with cut side up or place on a baking pan a little apart. Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes. Makes 12 swirls.

Biscuit Swirl Variations and Fillings:

  • Banana-Peanut Butter Swirl Filling – 2 tbsp soft butter, 1/4 cup mashed bananas, 1/2 tsp lemon juice, 2 tbsp chunky peanut butter and 1 tbsp brown sugar. Mix well and spread evenly over rolled dough.
  • Cinnamon Swirl Filling – 2 tbsp soft butter, 1/4 cup white or brown sugar,1/4 tsp cinnamon. Mix well and spread evenly over rolled dough.
  • Orange Swirl Filling – add 1 tsp orange rind to biscuit swirl dough before rolling. Then – 1/3 cup soft butter, 1/2 cup sugar, 1 tsp grated orange rind. Mix well and spread evenly over rolled dough.
  • Peanut Butter and Jelly Swirl Filling – 2 tbsp soft butter, 1/4 cup tart jelly, 1 tbsp chunky peanut butter. Mix well and spread evenly over rolled dough.
  • Pineapple Swirl Filling – 1 (8oz) can drained pineapple, 2 tbsp soft butter, 2 tbsp milk, 1/4 cup brown sugar. Mix well and spread evenly over rolled dough. (can use the juice from the drained pineapple for liquid in the biscuit swirl recipe.)
  • Cheese Swirl Variation – reduce sugar to 1 tbsp or even omit in the biscuit swirl recipe then add to the biscuit swirl dough – 1/2 cup grated sharp cheese, 1/2 tsp grated onion and a pinch or oregano. No Filling for this one just continue recipe as stated above. Can top with caraway seeds sprinkled lightly.
